Black Sabbath Hit Birmingham

Black Sabbath launched their re-union with a show in Birmingham on Saturday night (May 19th).

Metal was born in the Midlands. Lumbering out of the centre of British heavy industry, it quickly became a form capable to stomping all over the globe.

So when Black Sabbath announced news of their return, it was only natural for them to return to Birmingham. Returning to their hometown, the iconic group announced plans for a one off show at the city's Academy venue.

Taking place on Saturday night (May 19th) the show saw drummer Tommy Clufetos fill in for the absent Bill Ward. A massive success, the sell out concert saw Black Sabbath draw on the full power of their iconic back catalogue.

Immediately after the show Geezer Butler posted a short note to fans, praising them and guitarist Tony Iommi - currently battling cancer.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you Birmingham. Best fans ever- you brought out the best in us. It was a privilege playing for you tonight. Tony was a hero - you were the best medicine he has had. Proud to be a Brummie."

Black Sabbath played:

Bee Gees' Robin Gibb Passes Away

Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.

With global sales of more than 200 million units, the Bee Gees are easily one of the most successful pop groups Britain has ever produced. Moving from 60s pop to psychedelia to country-folk inflections, the band's initial period saw them flirt with both pop stardom and cult obscurity.

Lauded for their beautiful harmonies and mature songwriting, a shift towards disco turned the Bee Gees into global stars. Never looking back, the band's career ended with the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003.

Later touring as a solo artist, Robin Gibb was dogged by health problems in recent years. Diagnosed with liver cancer, the singer underwent immediate hospital treatment but his condition sadly declined.

Contracting pneumonia earlier this year, Robin Gibb fell into a coma. Regaining consciousness, it seems that the singer's health declined over the past week with his family confirming news of his death in a short statement last night (May 21st).

The statement reads as follows:

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away on Sunday 20 May, 2012 at 10:46pm following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. They have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Leave your tribute to the singer HERE.

Fun: Lurpak Launch Foodbeats Project

Lurpak have launched their new Foodbeats project, allowing you to soundtrack your dinner.

Here's an unexpected confession: the Clash team are massive food fans. Our office is situated 100 yards from one of London's finest food markets, allowing us to gorge ourselves on meals which span the globe.

So Lurpak's Foodbeats.com project has naturally piqued our interest. A new website, the project allows fans to type in the meal of their choice - the programming will then match your recipe to a playlist.

According to Lurpak, Britons most often turn to Queen and Adele when in the kitchen. Now, that's not necessarily our bag but the theory is sound - although we'd definitely like more Southern soul, reggae and electronics in there.

Click HERE to try out the project.

...and here's Mongo Santamaria with 'Soul Cookin'.

Positivus Festival Returns

Latvia isn’t the first place that springs to mind when talking about music. Often overlooked, this region deserves a second glance. Positivus – the largest music and arts festival in the Baltic States – places together some brilliant internationally renowned acts with exciting talent from the provinces. This year you can see Manic Street Preachers, The Vaccines, Wild Beasts, and The Sound Poets all for a meagre 57 Euros (£45), camping included.

Beginning in 2007 with 4,000 attendees, the two day event has grown exponentially, now housing a 20,000 strong crowd each day. It’s no wonder the festival is a hit considering the scenic surroundings. Taking place inside a remote forest by the coastal city of Salacgriva, close to the Estonian border, ticket-holders get the best of a stunning landscape, and a sandy beach, to enjoy during the day-time, then at night the real fun begins.

The event is at the height of summer, July 20th-21st, across five stages and has already won the ‘Best European Festival’ award via the British Festival Guide. The first day sees Keane, Damien Rice, and Friendly Fires playing, while the second has everything from the aforementioned Welsh stalwarts to SBTRKT giving a like performance.

Elsewhere there’s a great chance to immerse yourself in the region’s most notable bands. The Sound Poets, a Latvian group who conquered the country’s charts before having considerable success abroad, play the ‘I Love You’ stage on the first day. Eskimo, an indie-dance troupe from Riga are one of the most enticing local acts, having come to prominence with the release of an EP combining ambient guitars with electronic elements.

It’s the kind of weekend at which you can watch all the action while swinging from a hammock if you so desire, a relaxing atmosphere, picturesque location, but nevertheless raucous music from an exhilarating line-up.

Positivus runs between July 20th - 21st.

Gaz Coombes Album Preview

Gaz Coombes is set to release new album 'Here Come The Bombs' on May 21st.

Stepping aside from much loved Britpop icons Supergrass, Gaz Coombes began work on his debut solo album last year. Working on his own for the first time, the songwriter attempted to piece together a full length document without the help of his childhood friends.

Signed, dealed and (soon to be) delivered, 'Here Come The Bombs' drops on May 21st. Gaz Coombes has unveiled a number of teaser tracks, with the artist recently piecing together a fully interactive trailer.

Get involved below.

- - -

“In a band, when you get a group of people who are walking the same path, it can be the most beautiful thing,” Coombes explained recently.

“But with this I felt it was really focused on just what I wanted to get across, and on my inspirations – they were all my things that I’m into, whether it’s film, film soundtrack, or past artists that we didn’t really look at much in Supergrass. That was all really exciting. This is a completely blank page in a blank book, ready to be written on.”

'Here Come The Bombs' is set to be released on May 21st.

Download: Perfume Genius - Rusty Chains

Perfume Genius is giving away new track 'Rusty Chains' as a free download - grab it now.

A vehicle for Michael Hadreas, Perfume Genius' second album 'Put Your Back N 2 It' has left virtually everyone who has come across its path spellbound.

Matching intense beauty with sheer intensity, Perfume Genius somehow managed to outdo his acclaimed debut album. Recently returning to the UK, Hadreas played a number of well received shows around the country.

Now the songwriter is giving away recent cut 'Rusty Chains'. Added to 'Put Your Back N 2 It' as an iTunes only exclusive, Perfume Genius has decided to release the track as a free download.

Grab 'Rusty Chains' HERE.

ClashMusic spoke to Michael Hadreas just after the release of 'Put Your Back N 2 It'. Revealing that he suffered greatly from nerves and writer's block, the songwriter admitted that he was overcome by doubt early in the writing sessions.

“There were a few months where I was aimless, trying to write and couldn’t” he sighed. “Just because I was getting a little nervous – I knew I was supposed to, y’know? There were these expectations on me. I wanted to – I don’t know, I just really wanted it to be good. I was thinking too much about it so it became forced and not very genuine. I just realised how uncool I was, I kind of came to terms with that. I realised that I’m just going to make something which is really earnest and not very hip. I just started doing what I normally do.”

Bono To Become Richest Musician On The Planet

U2 frontman Bono is in line to become the richest musician on the planet after a stock market floatation.

At one point in time, U2 were regarded as a vaguely credible, post-punk outfit. Martin Hannett stepped in to produce their debut single, while by the time the Irish band's second album came around they had joined an obscure Christian sect.

How times have changed. Fresh from sinking enormous amounts of cash into a Spiderman musical, Bono's Facebook investments are set to turn him into the wealthiest musician on the planet.

Keeping a close eye on his financial affairs, Bono purchased a 2.3% stake in Facebook through the private equity firm Elevation Partners.

Facebook was floated on the stock market earlier today (May 18th) and - if financial predictions are anything to go by - Bono could be in line to earn a fortune. Given that the company is valued at over $100billion (£63 billion) the singer should be set to pocket around $1.5 billion (£940 million).

Added to his current wealth, this should mean that Bono will surpass Sir Paul McCartney and become the planet's wealthiest musician.

Donna Summer Tributes Flood In

Tributes are flooding in for disco icon Donna Summer, who sadly passed away yesterday (May 18th).

Never afraid to take chances, Donna Summer's work in the disco era changed pop music forever. Teaming up with producer Giorgio Moroder, the pair crafted tracks such as 'I Feel Love' which fully introduced electronic music to the charts.

Lighting the torch paper which would lead to house and techno, Donna Summer remained a powerful pop presence for almost forty years. Sadly succumbing to cancer yesterday (May 18th) tributes are flooding in for the disco icon.

Close friend Dolly Parton lead the tributes, offering her condolences. "I can't believe we've lost another wonderful singer. Donna, like Whitney, had one of the greatest voices ever. I loved her records. She was the disco queen, and will remain so. I knew her and found her to be one of the most likable and fun people ever. She will be missed and remembered."

Releasing a statement late last night (May 17th) Donna Summer's family said they were "at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy".

Soul icon Dionne Warwick paid her respects in a short statement: “i am very sad losing another of our industry’s great performers and my dear friend...............my heart goes out to her husband and her children..........prayers will be said to keep them strong.”

Even President Obama stepped into the fray, stating: "The music industry has lost a legend far too soon."

Handsome Furs Split Up

Handsome Furs have decided to split, notifying fans in a short message on Facebook.

A husband-wife pairing, Handsome Furs quickly became an important aspect of Montreal's always buoyant music scene. Attracting wider attention, the pair signed to Sub Pop in 2006 and swiftly released debut album 'Plague Park'.

Crafting three full length album, the band's most recent statement was 2011's 'Sound Kapital'. Written entirely on keyboards, it seemed to suggest that Handsome Furs were still exploring new territory.

Yet in a statement posted on their Facebook page earlier today Handsome Furs confirmed that they have decided to split.

With a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more.

The most important thing that needs to be said right now is how extremely grateful we are to all the fans all over the world that showered us with love and support over the years. Thank you for everything! It's been an incredible 6 years and we owe it all to you.

New York Senate In Adam Yauch Tribute

New York State Senate have drafted and adopted a new resolution honouring the life and work of Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch.

Adam Yauch was one of the good guys. One third of the Beastie Boys, MCA's impeccable flow and wicked imagination was matched to environment concerns and a lasting interest in Eastern religion.

Sadly passing away due to cancer earlier this year, the streets of New York were flooded by tributes to the rapper. An enormous Beastie Boys graffiti mural appeared, quickly going viral on the web before the New York Mets displayed a banner honouring the rapper.

Now the New York State Senate have adopted a new resolution paying their respects to the work of MCA. As SPIN and Pitchfork report, State Senator Daniel Squadron drafted the document with the house pausing to consider MCA's impact on life and culture in the Big Apple.

The resolution in full:

- - -

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of famed rapper and activist Adam "MCA" Yauch:

WHEREAS, Adam Yauch taught himself the bass guitar while growing up and joined the Beastie Boys, originally a hardcore punk outfit, playing his first show with the group when he was just 17 years old in 1981; and

WHEREAS, The album "Licensed to Ill" was the first hip-hop album to top the Billboard chart; and

WHEREAS, The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can't, they don't, they won't stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture; and

WHEREAS, The Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street; and

WHEREAS, Having consistently produced multi-million selling albums and receiving Grammy awards, in April 2012 the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Adam Yauch was unable to attend due to deteriorating health; and

WHEREAS, A man of colossal talent and charisma, Adam Yauch is survived by his wife, Dechen Wengdu, and their daughter, Losel; he will be missed by his family, his fans and all who knew him; his dedication to his music, his activism, and his heritage leaves an indelible legacy of inspiration for all other artists; now, therefore, be it

Jack White vs Guinness Book Of Records

Jack White and the Guinness Book of Records have fallen out in what is perhaps the year's most bizarre spat.

One of the White Stripes' final shows was also one of their shortest. Vowing to play every territory in Canada, the Detroit duo flew to a remote destination where a music hungry crowd had assembled.

Stepping onstage, the band played just one note before rushing offstage and back into their helicopter. At time, it was labelled the world's shortest gig but since then the White Stripes' claim has been challenged.

Removed from the Guinness Book of Records, Jack White recently took issue with the debate around the show. Chatting with Buzz Aldrin for Interview Magazine, the guitarist took a swipe at the organisation.

"There's nothing scientific about what they do" he said. "They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn't. I mean, there is some stuff like Olympic records where they have a committee. But most of the records in there-who has the biggest collection of salt-and-pepper shakers or whatever-are just whatever they want them to be".

"So with something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn't think whatever we did was interesting enough to make it a record. I don't know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book... Maybe this will help us get the word out."

NME then tracked down a spokesperson for the Guinness Book of Records, who argued that "the nature of competing to make something the 'shortest' by its very nature trivialises the activity being carried out".

As a result, all 'shortest' categories - shortest song, gig etc etc - were removed from the Guinness Book of Records. "Many of us at Guinness World Records are enormous admirers of Mr White's oeuvre,"they continued. "We would be extremely pleased if he were to attempt any of the 40,000 records that are currently active on our database.??"

Sailor Jerry Anti-Jubilee Line Up

Following on from our announcement last week that Sailor Jerry and CLASH will be holding an Anti-Jubilee Punk Party at Hotel Street on the 3rd June; today we are excited to reveal the headline band…DZ Deathrays.

DZ Deathrays have been taking the UK by storm since arriving on these shores from their native country Australia, playing sold out gigs to fervent fans and whipping up a frenzy through their high energy performances and ‘no rules’ style.

The band are currently on tour, taking in various countries across Europe and will be playing this exclusive Anti-Jubilee Punk Party at Hotel Street as part of Sailor Jerry’s weekly music events, exhibitions and film screenings.

Hotel Street on Charing Cross Road is named after the infamous district in Chinatown, Honolulu where sailors would blow off steam during the Second World War. There, in the Hotel Street District Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins built his legendary tattooing reputation with his innovative style, independent values and no BS attitude. A gallery, store and cafe by day and gig and dive bar by night, Hotel Street, located on Charing Cross Road is an all-round good place for bad people.

The gig promises to be an alternative to your traditional Bank Holiday knees up and we expect the 3rd June to be fizzing with atmosphere, as it falls over the weekend when the country will be celebrating the Queen’s sixty years on the throne.

Ably warming up the party for DZ Deathrays will be a support band, which we’ll be announcing shortly and our own Clash DJ’s, who’ll be unleashing a torrent of punk classics.

Whatever your beliefs, there's no excuse for not having a party so we’ll see you on the 3rd June at Hotel Street.

Donna Summer Passes Away - Reports

Reports are flooding in that disco icon Donna Summer has passed away at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer.

If the disco era can be said to have one, true icon then that performer is Donna Summer. In commercial terms alone, the singer dominated the playing field notching up chart record after chart record.

Yet Donna Summer was able to match her commercial nous with a palpable sense of Futurism. Hooking up with German producer Giorgio Moroder, the pair injected new technology into American music.

'I Feel Love' turned the music world upside down, establishing synthesisers as a force in the charts and lighting the trail which would lead to House and Techno.

Later taking a break from disco, Donna Summer would remain an outstanding performer during a career which has spanned more than four decades.

Latterly living with her family in Nashville, the singer was recently diagnosed with cancer. Undergoing treatment, entertainment site TMZ reports that Donna Summer sadly passed away this morning (May 17th).
