The British Sentencing Council has suggested that recreational drug users who buy small amounts to share with their friends should avoid long jail sentences.
The council used an example of two students living in the same flat, sharing the cost of 20 ecstasy pills. The one who buys them gets arrested before he can give them to his flatmate but they admit they both put in money.
The guidelines suggest the starting point for the courts should be an 18 month jail sentence but the bottom of the range would be an 18-month community order.
