Michael Stipe has given his opinion on the recent row caused by YouTube pulling a Perfume Genius ad.
The new Perfume Genius album is worth checking out. 'Put Your Back In 2 It' has some beautiful moments, with Mike Hadreas often found reflecting on his sexuality, the nature of love and the difficulties in finding affection.
Matador Records put together an ad for the album, which they then attempted to place on YouTube. Blocked on the grounds that it contains "non family safe material" the decision has caused uproar online.
Now support has come from one of rock's most recognisable frontmen. Michael Stipe has lauded the new Perfume Genius album, and blasted YouTube for pulling the advert.
In a blog posting the singer wrote:
I’ve been listening to the new Perfume Genius record all last week in Mexico, it is a beautiful and amazing record and a stunning 2nd album and achievement. But in trying to advertise the record and first video, this short clip has been banned by YouTube. For YouTube to deem this advertisement as “non family safe” is dumbheaded discrimination; I find their actions in doing so disgraceful and cowardly. YouTube, shame on you. You were born of the 21st Century, now act like it.
