Disney have pulled their range of Joy Division t-shirts as prices on eBay go through the roof.
Joy Division. A band named after the wing of a concentration camp where prostitutes were held for the benefit of prison guards. Not the sort of thing you would normally associate with Mickey Mouse...
But yet Disney recently unveiled a range of t-shirts inspired by the cover of Joy Division's debut album 'Unknown Pleasures'. Causing an immediate storm online, the clothing range was widely criticised.
Now the firm appear to have changed their mind. Pitchfork points out that the Disney store is no longer selling the item, with a representative from Disney quoted as saying: "As soon as we became aware there could be an issue, we pulled it from our shelves and our online store to review the situation further."
The shirts have now hit eBay, with the top bids now reaching over $200. An instant collectors item, you can bid HERE.
The current line up of New Order refused to comment on the t-shirt, although Peter Hook did offer a few pearls of wisdom. "It's a funny one," he told Billboard. "I suppose you would have to say it's a compliment coming from an organization like Disney. When you consider that Joy Division were only together for three years, it's certainly a fantastic compliment thirty-four years later to still be able to make a splash like this is. The fact that it's sold out is an even greater compliment".
Apparently finding the t-shirt pretty funny, Peter Hook referenced a few other Joy Division oddities. "When somebody comes to you with the Joy Division oven glove or the Joy Division contraceptive nowadays, you can find the humor in everything".
