Gaz Coombes Album Preview

Gaz Coombes is set to release new album 'Here Come The Bombs' on May 21st.

Stepping aside from much loved Britpop icons Supergrass, Gaz Coombes began work on his debut solo album last year. Working on his own for the first time, the songwriter attempted to piece together a full length document without the help of his childhood friends.

Signed, dealed and (soon to be) delivered, 'Here Come The Bombs' drops on May 21st. Gaz Coombes has unveiled a number of teaser tracks, with the artist recently piecing together a fully interactive trailer.

Get involved below.

“In a band, when you get a group of people who are walking the same path, it can be the most beautiful thing,” Coombes explained recently.

“But with this I felt it was really focused on just what I wanted to get across, and on my inspirations – they were all my things that I’m into, whether it’s film, film soundtrack, or past artists that we didn’t really look at much in Supergrass. That was all really exciting. This is a completely blank page in a blank book, ready to be written on.”

'Here Come The Bombs' is set to be released on May 21st.

INmusic Festival Returns

If Glastonbury festival, or the lack thereof, has left a gaping hole in this summer’s festival diary, don’t hang up your wellies and wet wipes just yet. That leaves you free to get a little bit more exotic this year, with your weekend free to visit INmusic Festival in Croatia. The festival is taking place over the last weekend in June (28th, 29th and 30th) on the beautiful banks of Lake Jarun in Zagreb and 2012 plays host to an array of top indie rock acts.

First headliners of the weekend are Franz Ferdinand, and they’re joined on the line up by champions of indie, rock and pop, The Cranberries, Plan B, Gogol Bordello, Dry the River, Archie Bronson Outfit and loads more. Celebrating seven years of Demon Days, monkey-inspired musicians Gorillaz’s side act, Gorillaz Sound Sytem, will also be heading the bill, seamlessly merging top Gorillaz hits with an award winning visual delight.

As well as all that, the three day festival, which takes place on the aptly named Island of Youth, will bring out the kid in you with the area offering an array of outdoor activities including kayaking, cycling, hiking and exploring Croatia’s capital, Zagreb.

INmusic runs between June 28th - 30th. Line up:

Their Library: Zulu Winter

Their Library is an excuse to let musicians mouth off about a subject which might otherwise be neglected - books.

The influences which sluice into your favourite album are not merely restricted to music - literature, cinema and more help inspire and provoke new artworks.

London newcomers Zulu Winter have been causing ripples of hype over the past 12 months, and finally deigned to release their debut album 'Language' earlier this week.

Tracking down drummer Guy Henderson, we probed the musician about the literary influences which drive him forward.

- - -

What is your favourite book and why?
'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt. I read this book as a student in the 2nd year of my degree course and found it particularly poignant as at the centre of the story is a young man going through student life, making new friends and growing up. There's a sense of danger and mystery surrounding the central characters of the book that's exciting and the plot unravels very cleverly. The thing I find most incredible is the way that Donna Tartt is able to get inside the head of a young man and write in the first person of a male character so truthfully.

What other authors do you like?
Martin Amis, Mikhail Bulgakov, Charles Bukowski, Ayn Rand to name a few I've recently been enjoying.

What draws you to certain books?
With books, as with films, I most often pick up books that come as recommendations from friends… As a band we're always throwing copies of this and that at each other and it's fun when a book does the round and we can all chat about it. Right now I've just been reading a lot of classics.

Do your literary influences have a direct impact on your songwriting? Personally speaking I'd be lying if I said I'd specifically fed my literary influences into songwriting. However I do believe that the music your writing at any given time will draw influence from many different things going on in your life and that might often be a book your reading. As a band a very important part of our writing process is to share influences with each other… Obviously its mostly music that we share that influences us but equally if there's a book we've all read at the same time, or a theatre production we've all been to or an art exhibition we've all enjoyed then we might find a shared mood that comes across in the music we're working on. I also know that lyrically Will often get's strongly influenced by what he's reading.

What are you reading at the moment?
'The Plague' by Albert Camus.

What is the first book you remember reading as a child?
'The Twits' by Roald Dahl.

Did you make good use of your library card as a child / teenager?
I was very lucky to have a great Library attached to the school I was at and I did use it a lot.

How do you think literature achieves timelessness?
I believe the most important element to contribute to all timeless art is that it's honest and comes from a truthful place. Particularly with literature I think is very important that it's rooted in the human condition.

Do you read book reviews?
I rarely do.

Would you ever re-read the same book?
I've never actually completely re-read a book before but there's been a couple of occasions when I've read half or 2 of a book and then lost and come back to it from the beginning.

Have you ever identified with a character in a book? Which one and why?
I frequently identify with character's in books I read and think the best books always make you do that…

Do you read one book at a time or more than one?
I usually like to just read one book at a time although I'l quite often be reading a book of non-fiction alongside a novel.

Is there an author / poet you would like to collaborate with?
At the moment I'm very interested in collaborating with a playwright. There is a playwright/writer called Kenny Empson that I've known for a few years who I'm keen to pin down for a collaboration at some point (although he can be rather elusive). I haven't seen him for a while and I'm pretty sure he's not aware of it so if he's reading this itcould be an odd way for him to find out.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse, 'Clementine' -- Exclusive Video Premiere

Danny Clinch

For Americana, Neil Young's first album with the band Crazy Horse in nearly nine years, the singer-songwriter revisits classic American folk songs and delivers the tunes, which encompass familiar protest songs, murder ballads and campfire songs, with electrifying ferocity. In spite of -- or perhaps because of the approach, the universal appeal of the songs is neither lost nor diminished and they retain their relevance in these challenging times.

"Clementine," the oft-sung tale of a grieving miner, which has become a popular children's song, is believed to be based on a 1863 song titled "Down by the River Liv'd a Maiden," by H.S. Thompson. However, Neil writes in the Americana liner notes that the song is usually credited to Percy Montrose or Barker Bradford from about 1884.

Wayne Newton Sexual Harassment, Animal Abuse Allegations: Singer Sued Over Home Museum Plans

Wayne Newton Sexual Harassment Animal Abuse AllegationsAxelle Woussen, Bauer-Griffin

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Plans to turn Wayne Newton's sprawling Las Vegas estate into a celebrity museum have shifted into an ugly legal battle citing mismanagement, animal abuse and sexual harassment.

The company that purchased the rights to convert Newton's home into "Graceland West" filed a lawsuit this week in Las Vegas against Newton, his wife and her 76-year-old mother that claims the family unreasonably delayed the project to ensure it never opens.

The Newton family claims the lawsuit is a preemptive strike because they had planned to sue the company for breach of contract after multiple construction delays. The family plans to file a counter lawsuit challenging the allegations made by CSD, LLC.

The legal wrangling paints an uncertain future for Newton's 40-acre estate featuring South African penguins, Arabian horses, Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and 17th-century antiques collected from European castles.

Download: Perfume Genius - Rusty Chains

Perfume Genius is giving away new track 'Rusty Chains' as a free download - grab it now.

A vehicle for Michael Hadreas, Perfume Genius' second album 'Put Your Back N 2 It' has left virtually everyone who has come across its path spellbound.

Matching intense beauty with sheer intensity, Perfume Genius somehow managed to outdo his acclaimed debut album. Recently returning to the UK, Hadreas played a number of well received shows around the country.

Now the songwriter is giving away recent cut 'Rusty Chains'. Added to 'Put Your Back N 2 It' as an iTunes only exclusive, Perfume Genius has decided to release the track as a free download.

Grab 'Rusty Chains' HERE.

ClashMusic spoke to Michael Hadreas just after the release of 'Put Your Back N 2 It'. Revealing that he suffered greatly from nerves and writer's block, the songwriter admitted that he was overcome by doubt early in the writing sessions.

“There were a few months where I was aimless, trying to write and couldn’t” he sighed. “Just because I was getting a little nervous – I knew I was supposed to, y’know? There were these expectations on me. I wanted to – I don’t know, I just really wanted it to be good. I was thinking too much about it so it became forced and not very genuine. I just realised how uncool I was, I kind of came to terms with that. I realised that I’m just going to make something which is really earnest and not very hip. I just started doing what I normally do.”

Myakkah "I Want To Feel"

Thudding, intricately designed kicks are often the centerpiece of an artist's work, carving out a suitably weighty core for the other elements of the track to orbit. But what if these other elements were of the same hefty material, and demanded the same amount of gravitational pull as that all-important bass drum? Answering that question is Myakkah, a new producer with a forthcoming EP on Diskotopia, Warehouse Soul, that focuses on the tension and grittiness of classic New York house without sacrificing an oft-forgotten aspect of that era: balance. "I Want To Feel" strikes an equilibrium by pitching kicks, subs, and higher-register percussion into new shapes that seem to enter and exit knowingly, anticipating their brethren on the frequency range to create a breathing effect. The synths certainly add to this inhale/exhale headspace, but the role of the percussion in inducing a push and pull is what Myakkah really seems to be keyed in on. Warehouse Soul is out on May 21; click through to the jump for a video of "I Want To Feel," a new DJ mix from Myakkah, and a preview stream of the four-track EP.

Handsome Furs Break Up

Filed under: News, Exclusive, Holy Hell

Handsome FursSub Pop

Sad news rocked the indie world late Thursday May 17 when electro-punk duo Handsome Furs, also known as husband-and-wife Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry, announced on their website:

"With a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more.

The most important thing that needs to be said right now is how extremely grateful we are to all the fans all over the world that showered us with love and support over the years. Thank you for everything! It's been an incredible 6 years and we owe it all to you."

Handsome Furs initially began as a spin-off of Boeckner's other (also sadly defunct) band Wolf Parade but never reaching a similar crossover success, despite being equally deserving. Since the release of 2009's unimpeachable epic Face Control, which perfected their mix of Springsteen-esque anthemics, floor-filling analogue synths and foreign land lyrics, the Handsome Furs had settled for being one of indie music best groups.

Village Green / Emotional Rescue / Artwork
My day job involves being part of a design studio called Village Green. We basically work image making, branding and designing for companies such as Nike, Granta and Penguin Books. The work is pretty varied and we like to do the odd piece of music design as its where the roots lie (the studio in a previous incarnation designed sleeves for Pulp, Leftfield and quite a few others) so recently we have been creating the artwork for the Emotional Rescue guys and their reissues label that is going from strength to strength. Some amazing things coming up on the label that we’ve been hearing and the sister label, Emotional Response, releasing new music, is coming soon. If you want to find out more about the studio you can email me here.
